Redesigned for a catering couple, this terrace renovation places the kitchen at the centre of the action. Servicing an indoor and an outdoor dining space, the kitchen is located at the rear of the ground floor plan. The original rabbit-warren of rooms and knotty stair with multiple landings were rigorously rationalised, opening up the terrace on ground and first floors and creating seamless horizontal spaces. The stairs counterpoise this horizontal language, as an elongated triple storey sculpted shaft linking the public and private spaces of the house. The lush garden is a delightful surprise in inner city Surry Hills.
