From the street, this house still reads as a modest single-storey 1880s weather-board workers’ cottage. Behind, a new two-storey volume opens the old house up to the garden and to much-needed sunlight. The old and new are clearly articulated as two similarly proportioned L-shapes in plan are separated by courtyards, bringing the garden into the centre of the house and allowing light and air into the house’s original parts.
An unexpected double-height space announces the new, public spaces of the house. Openings playfully pin-wheel around this space, allowing light at all times of the day. From the rear, the new volume appears to hover over the garden. The living spaces open up to a north facing deck while the bedroom is nestled in the trees.
